The deification is the glorification of a subject to divine level. In theology, the term refers to the idea that an individual has been raised to godlike stature. In art, the term refers to the treatment of any subject (a figure, group, locale, motif, convention or melody) in a particularly grand or exalted manner. In DE MAGIA VETERUM’s lexicon, it’s nothing less than a systematic work of destruction, a rejection of logic, an embrace of chaos and irrationality. With this new release, bearing the contradictory title ‘The Deification’, –M- (GNAW THEIR TONGUES mastermind Mories) presents a more mature piece of work in terms of consistency and configurations, a thorough and undivided composition.
Trying to comprehend this record is like diving into pandemonium. This is sonically presented with ‘Eradication’ starting as a distorted pulsation that creates quite an unsettling environment but not for long as ‘Thorns’ is quickly introduced. That tremolo picking of ‘Thorns’ and the majority of the songs inlcuded, along with the incoherent disharmonies may lead one to believe that this unstable and continuous guitar wailing is actually a chaos controlled. The fluctuations are more present than ever making the epileptic outbursts that usually follow even more notable and standout. ‘Passage’ has this terrifying but welcoming dissonance that is present in the next track ‘Evoked in Poison’ as well, ingredients that reek of toxicity, in addition to the highly atmospheric yet appaling transitions that can be found scattered throughout the record. The vocals seem to add to the absurdity that this record is, even more. Unearthly screams, ferocious and desperate cries that feel like a force dragging one deeper and deeper into the abyss. The title track is equally relentless as the rest of the album, marking it as something of apocalyptic proportions rather than of exalted deifying. ‘The Deification’ is completely filled with various rhythmic components through the multiple layers of sounds, be it guitars or that ear-piercing bass, that are so confusedly interlaced, like reverberating within a maelstrom. Even if you think that you’ve nailed a certain song arrangement, the next riff will throw you into complete disorderly musical mass and back again.
Finishing off, I would like to add that DE MAGIA VETERUM returns with a provocative and sacrilegious release, a combustible force of dangerous music that will cater to those who scoff at things like melody, structure and substance.‘The Deification’ is geared towards a very small percentage of listeners as it’s very peculiar content makes it quite hard to digest. I don’t even know if I like it in the first place but I sure find it intriguing, even attractive. This is yet another step into the pulpits of madness, are you ready to take it?
