Brutal death metal-legends Deranged, hailing from Malmö, Sweden, are still ripping flesh, breaking bones and eating brains like it’s still the 90s. With the newly added Anders Johansson on guts, they just released, ‘Morgue Orgy’ EP which saw the band return faster and more brutal than ever. The album arises stormingly, Deranged needs no introduction or other gimmick after all, it is just straight up, in your face brutal death metal. The powerful and crude riffs, ferocious and vitriolic, induced with natural and pinch harmonics make this violent whirlpool even more intense, if that’s even possible. Anders Johansson’s deep, guttural growls sound more hellish than ever, although a bit monotonous from time to time.
The two songs that follow after (‘Symphony of Screams’ and ‘Machine Built to Kill’), continue the savagery in the same fast-paced formula although Thomas Ahlgren’s really well-worked riffs follow one another in the most astringent of ways . No sense of melody is particularly present in ‘Morgue Orgy’ (as the title prominently indicates), just sheer brutality. Same with the solos which, although perfectly executed, serve no other purpose than make this situation even more tainted. The bass guitar remains present but mostly in the background, highlighting certain passages with some really tasteful lines, still is a great weight for a much needed brutal sound. ‘’Hello from the Gutters’, which is probably my favourite song of the bunch, is a significanlty slower song but it is its twisted structure, crushing mid-paced riffs and groove that make it destructive. The final track on this EP is a cover of S.O.D’s classic song ‘Milk’, a pleasant surprise that will really grab the listener by the crotch.
Overall, all compositions are well thought out and developed, presenting a speedier, tighter and more compact band. It seems that Deranged don’t rest on their laurels but they are still grinding high quality death metal. What I can say for sure is that, for those you haven’t heard ‘Morgue Orgy’ yet, you can definitely expect one the most brutal Deranged offerings yet!
