Keep your eyes wide shut! What is "The Konsortium”? Is it a band with 04 members or is it a new one-man-phenomenon from the janus-faced music-culture of Norway? Is it pure art or is it entertainment or is it just the next big thing of the Norwegian Avantgarde-scene? If a band starts out with such intensity and the motivation to begin just something different by breaking stylistic limits in a very fascinating way, it is definitely something which should be recognized. The Konsortium has indeed a very grotesque, sterile and obscure visual concept, which reminds, just because of the fact that they are wearing a special type of masks, slightly of The Phantom of the Opera. And undeniable, this band is a phantom, which shows cold musical decadence and bizarre innovation...and that's quite atypical in today’s world of music.
In the year 2008 "The Konsortium” will release their debut through a small Scandinavian record-label called Interregnum Records and I’m sure that this piece of music will bring this project/band to the pantheon of Norwegian musician-ship, where bands like Keep of Kalessin, Satyricon and others have already sat down on their at the moment quite rattly and brashly thrones, who were originally made for the royals of sophisticated and avantgardistic black metal a decade ago.
We will see where "The Konsortium” finds its place in the next years, but hopefully close to a place where Thorns, Ansur and DHG sat down.
The four harsh, cold and obscure tracks of their first EP (or Demo) are spectacular. "Under The Black Flag", "Gasmask Prince", "Decomposers" and "Onwards! Onwards!" are all songs where you can smell Black Metal in a progressive way. "Under The Black Flag” is a song full of dark musical surprises and the complex structure shows beside from the fact that the 04 members are composing on a high technical standard, also the possibilities the band could show in the near future. "Gasmask Prince" and "Onwards! Onwards!" bring some old-school influences into sound of "The Konsortium” without loosing the strange and obscure atmosphere, which was built in the first song. "Decomposers" is a slow musical hybrid born out of a reduced riffing spiced with dissonances. But the most important part of "The Konsortiums” musical cosmos is the variable vocal-technique of the voice-soloist, who just keeps everything together by creating unique arrangements between clean and extreme vocal-performances.
In other words: The guitar-player and the drummer are amazing but the vocalist is fantastic! To answer the questions from the beginning: Yes, "The Konsortium” could be the next big thing. They have the same potential as bands like Keep of Kalessin have/had, but their musical presence and their visual concept shows that this band wants more.
